Based in Hampshire, and originally founded in 1973 as a model car racing and then boating club, Firebirds moved to its present form as an aeromodelling club in 1976. Initially, members flew both heli and fixed wing aircraft, however, more recently the club has been dominated by aeroplanes.
Now with more than 70 members, it has a keen community of both electric and IC flyers, with many members flying both disciplines. It has also recently grown a small community of heli-flyers, although this is not the main interest of the club and fixed wing takes precedence.
All aspects of the hobby are present, with interests ranging from control-line and vintage, through to scale models and warbirds; there are also a number of members who are keen 3D and pattern flyers. We actively promote tuition and Firebirds is one of the main teaching clubs in the South Coast area.
